Ornery Lee Lewis: Killer Slays Band

Although the large, cheering crowd didn’t seem to notice (the Killer’s signature slurry Louisiana accent made some of his words hard to decipher), Jerry Lee Lewis was not pleased with his longtime band during his Sunday afternoon performance in Tom Lee Park.

“You’re not going through anything worse than what I’m going through with this band,” he said to the audience after his ninth number, apparently responding to some sort of shout or pratfall in the crowd. Before his final song, “Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On,” he pointed at longtime bass player B.B. Cunningham with a stern look and said: “You’re too loud to begin with!” In fact, by this time the mix had degraded to a muddy thud, with the bass notes overpowering Kenny Lovelace’s guitar and Lewis’ piano.

After finishing “Shakin’,” Lewis kicked over his piano stool and strode to the mic and said: “Think of what I could have done with a better band.” His displeasure may explain why he didn’t return for an encore, despite the entreaties of the audience.

For the record, here’s the Killer’s set list: 1. “Roll Over Beethoven”; 2. “You Win Again”; 3. “Drinkin’ Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee”; 4. “I Wish I Was Eighteen Again”; 5. “Sweet Little Sixteen”; 6. “Hadacol Boogie”; 7. “Before the Night Is Over”; 8. “As Far As I’m Concerned”; 9. “The One Rose Left in My Heart”; 10. “Great Balls of Fire”; 11. “I Don’t Want To Be Lonely Tonight”; 12. “Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On.”

I don’t know…perhaps the Jerrymeister has lost a little of his stuff over the years…I thought the band was pretty good…I thought he was, well…pretty bad.

That was a long time Band of his? No wonder his career was in the toilet for so long. Those refugees from the Saturday night Elks Club dance were pitiful. I was amazed he put up with them as well as he did. I would have thrown them off the stage and played solo. ( don’t quit your day jobs felows)

Here is a hint for the sound people. We came to hear Jerry Lee sing and play piano. What we heard was a garbled up bass guitar and kick (bass) drum overpowering everything.

Here is another clue for the soundman. A piano has a middle range and lower keys too. If you miked those it would sound better. Whenever Jerry Lee left the high keys and moved down the keyboard, the sound disapeared.

It was a shame because the old guy still has it.

I wasn’t there so can’t comment on the performance, but isn’t the sound level the responsibility of someone other than the band? Like, the people who set up for them and did the sound check?
